BURA FLOODS UPDATE S ON 17TH NOVEMBER 2014

Introduction

Following the heavy rains experienced since 14th November 2014 at Tana Delta, Bura and Hirimani Locations in Bura Division were among the area affected. The rains that were reported to last over 4 hours led to flash floods at Hirimani which is occasioned by flooding from the main canal situated near Bura Town.

POST BOMA PEACE COMMITIMENT AGREEMENT MEETING

  Following the signing of the Peace Commitment Agreement on 17th September 2014 at the Boma Hotel Nairobi, in regards to the Mpeketoni attack effects, a community Peace meeting together with the local leaders was held on 27th September 2014 in Lamu Town. This was so as to enlighten the larger community group representatives, from all the Lamu County affected community groups, what the agreement comprised of and derive the way forward on how to disseminate it further to the grassroots level. 

Kenya Red Cross Responds To Kapedo Attacks

The Kenya Red Cross Society responded to the Kapedo Attacks and has been since 1st November 2014 assisted in evacuating the victims and provision of first aid services among the casualties. Also a rapid assessment was conducted where 34 Houses were found to be burnt, 5 shops, including the only posho mill in the area, a church and staff quarters at Lonyangapuo Primary School were razed down in Chesitet Location.

Situation Overview

Following the conflict attack that broke out among the Pokot and Tukana communities in Kapedo two weeks ago, tension is still higher in most areas.

Consequently many properties were found to be destroyed, including 10 commercial premises that were vandalized, at Riong’o centre which is 30km from Chemolingot on 11th Nov 2014. While at Chesakam area, 20km from Kapedo 36 houses were also vandalized with food stuffs, clothing and furniture destroyed, and 10 houses burnt on 12th November.

Situation Overview
It is the second week now, since the Kapedo attack emerged and response interventions initiated. Currently the situation is calm although there is mass population movement reported towards Marigat and Kabarnet areas from Chemolingot town.

The Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General Dr. Abbas Gullet held a meeting with visiting Secretary General of the United Nations on 30th October 2014 at Windor Hotel Nairobi. Among the issues discussed included how to accelerate the realization of the Millennium Development Goal 5 on Maternal and Child Health and Global health issues affecting the world and how they can be addressed through the World Health Summit, which is an initiative of Ban Ki- Moon.

KRCS Commissions the Isiolo Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Community Project

On 30th October 2014, the Kenya Red Cross Society commissioned the Isiolo Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Community Project for Drought-Prone Arid and Semi-Arid Lands. This is a 45 months project that commenced in May 2011 and is funded by the European Union and Danish Red Cross to a tune of EUR 3.4 Million.

Situational Update On Kenya Red Cross Response In Kapedo Turkana Attacks

Since 25th October 2014, conflict attacks among the Pokot and Tukana communities broke out in Turkana County. This was reported to be as result of the community leadership, and geographical boundaries for Kapedo community that is claimed to be in Baringo County, in reference to the 1972 boundary map. Although the retaliatory attacks in Kapedo village, were reported to be instigated when a young man from the Pokot community was killed in August 2014.
