May 5 is the internationally recognised day for highlighting the work of midwives. The day recognises the hard work by midwives in ensuring mothers and their families receive quality care.
This year, KRCS celebrates Dhahabo Abagaro, a midwife currently working with KRCS at the Dadaab refugee camp.
She is well known in Dadaab's Ifo 2 refugee camp for her role in promoting maternal and neonatal health to marginalised women among the refugee community.
“I believe that every mother counts, that is why I go an extra mile from door to door, encouraging pregnant women to attend antenatal clinic, also promoting safe deliveries by skilled personnel,” she says.
Dahhabo provides family planning counselling, teaching traditional birth attendants on safe motherhood, encouraging them to promote skilled hospital delivery and reproductive health education to women and families in the community. She has also set up reproductive health focus groups in her community where she educates mothers on safe motherhood and encourages exclusive breastfeeding.
Her contribution has helped reduce the maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality levels in Dadaab refugee camp. She is also working with Community Based Volunteers, encouraging women to deliver in health facilities.
