World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day Observed
Annually, the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement celebrates World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on 8th May. This year’s celebration was under the theme: “Everywhere for Everyone” under the sub theme: “Did you know?
The aim of this year’s celebrations was to broaden the understanding of the general public on the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement by showing the diversity of our humanitarian work around the world in a way that challenges the traditional view of the movement.
The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) through her branches took part in the celebration through implementing a number of activities geared towards public participation.
In Nairobi, representatives from the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent (IFRC) joined the KRCS team in Nairobi and paid a visit at Mama Fatuma Goodwill Children’s Home located at Eastleigh Estate. The home hosts a total of 85 children; 59 boys and 26 girls with the youngest two weeks old.
The visit saw the team donate food, non-food items and spent time with the children.
“We appreciate your kind gesture and feel lucky that you chose to celebrate your day with us,” said Mohamed Hiribae, the Home Manager. “We are humbled that you spared your time and resources to come and give donations to this children’s home,” Haribae added.
The KRCS team in Isiolo equally chose to share this day with orphans and vulnerable children at Victor Children’s Home where they donated food and non-food stuff. In Uasin Gishu and Meru county, our team donated food and non-food items to children at a rescue centre and Meru Children's Home respectively.
The KRCS team in Nyeri took up the fight against jiggers by conducting anti-jiggers campaign at Kabiruini in Karatina. The event saw the attendance of 134 children. The children each received a pair of shoes through the Tom Shoes project.
The Embu County team celebrated the day by spending time with children and their mothers at the Embu Women's prison where they donated non-food items.
The Red Cross Red Crescent Day was a huge success and we acknowledge and appreciate all the staff, volunteers and members of the movement for their hard work and efforts in carrying out humanitarian work worldwide.
