Kenya Red Cross Garissa Branch held the first ever Youth Camp from the 1st-6th of April 2018 at the Garissa Government Guest House.
The camp that was first of its kind had a total of 54 participants from other KRCS Branches including: Nairobi, Mandera, Wajir Mombasa, Garissa Embu, Nakuru, Kirinyaga, Maragua, Nyeri, Trans-Nzoia and Thika. The participants undertook different activities, which included holding a commemorative marathon for the Garissa University attack. KRCS youth volunteers also visited various children homes where they fed, engaged in cleaning activities and played with the children. The participants also got an opportunity to visit Dadaab Refugee Camp to learn about the operations of the Kenya Red Cross Society at the camp. The campers further engaged in team building activities.
KRCS Garissa County Coordinator Tusmo Ogle expressed her gratitude for a camp well-coordinated, said it had aided in ending the unfavourable perception about the region. She further said that they would purpose to organise such camps as a way of growing the branch and promoting healthy competition between the various KRCS branches.
“I can confidently say that every camper in attendance left this place with a transformed image of Garissa County. It is our wish that we organize more of such events so that we have more ambassadors to disseminate KRCS best practices,” Tusmo added
Acting Regional Manager Mr. Abdulhakim Otula, also thanked all the participants from the different regions, adding that it was a sign of good will and branch partnership. He further promised to continue working closely with other KRCS branches and support each other.
