In its quest to contribute to sustainable improvement in livelihood among the most vulnerable communities through provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Department has aligned itself to the IFRC global water and sanitation initiative, which outlines a common approach among National Societies to establish large scale, long term sustainable water and sanitation programmes. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) further acknowledges that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. Sustainable development cannot be
achieved without access to safe water for both domestic use as well as adequate water to support livelihood interventions. The WASH department, therefore, implements programming that make direct contributions to the realization of SDG 6: “Ensure availability and sustain- able management of water and sanitation for all” while contributing to the achievement of multiple SDGs, which impact through the provision of water for both domestic and livelihood uses, improved sanitation and hygiene education. The focus of the department is to continue to sustainably improve access to environmentally safe water and sanitation facilities for the most vulnerable communities, as well as promote community participation and ownership, which are instrumental in enhancing sustainability of community projects.
