1. Terms

  • Eligibility: 
    The hackathon is open to individuals aged 18 and above, regardless of nationality. Participants have to be part of a team (up to 5 members). Employees of Kenya Red Cross are not eligible to participate, However, members and volunteers are highly encouraged to participate. 
  • Team Formation: 
    Teams may be formed prior to or during the hackathon. Cross-functional teams are encouraged, and participants may collaborate with others from different disciplines. We recommend teams of 3 -5 entrants. Only 3 however will be invited for the final pitch 
  • Submission Guidelines: 
    Submissions can be in the form of software prototypes, designs, or written proposals, depending on the hackathon’s theme. Deadlines and format requirements must be strictly adhered to. Late submissions or incomplete entries will be disqualified. 
  • Disqualification: 
    Kenya Red Cross reserves the right to disqualify any participant or team for misconduct, violation of rules, or use of inappropriate content. Plagiarism or failure to meet deadlines will also result in disqualification. 

2. Liability Waiver and Indemnity 

By participating in the hackathon, participants agree to release and hold harmless Kenya Red Cross, its affiliates, partners, and sponsors from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses arising from participation in the event, including but not limited to personal injury, accidents, or loss of data.

3. Code of Conduct

Kenya Red Cross is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants. All participants must: 

  • Treat others with respect and professionalism. 
  • Avoid any form of harassment, discrimination, or disruptive behavior. 
  • Act with integrity and uphold ethical standards throughout the hackathon. 

Any violation of this code of conduct will result in immediate disqualification and removal from the event. 

4. Data Privacy and Protection 

Participants’ personal information will be collected solely for the purpose of administering the hackathon. Kenya Red Cross is committed to protecting participants’ privacy in compliance with the Data Protection Act of Kenya. 

  • Personal data, such as names and contact information, will be used for communication, administration, and promotion of the hackathon/ Challenge.
  • By participating, participants consent to the collection and use of their personal data for these purposes. 
  • Kenya Red Cross will not share participants’ personal data with third parties without consent, except as required by law. 

5. Use of Materials and Media 

By participating in the hackathon, participants grant Kenya Red Cross the right to use, reproduce, and distribute any photos, videos, and content created during the event for promotional or educational purposes. 

  • Participants agree that their image, likeness, and work may be used by Kenya Red Cross for promotional activities, including but not limited to social media, websites, and print materials. 
  • Participants retain ownership of their work but grant Kenya Red Cross the right to showcase and promote it in connection with the hackathon. 

6. Governing Law 

These terms and conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of Kenya. Any disputes arising in relation to the hackathon will be subject to the jurisdiction of Kenyan courts. 

7. Prizes and Rewards 

  • All prizes awarded during the hackathon are non-transferable and may not be exchanged for cash or other alternatives. 
  • Winners are responsible for complying with local tax regulations and will bear any tax liabilities related to the prizes. 
  • Cash grants are conditional; disbursement and use must be pre-approved, and winners will be required to provide a detailed account of expenditure. 
  • Kenya Red Cross reserves the right to modify or substitute prizes if necessary, without prior notice. 

8. Disclaimer 

Kenya Red Cross does not guarantee the success, commercial viability, or implementation of any solution developed during the hackathon. 

  • The responsibility for further development and implementation of the solutions rests solely with the participants. 
  • Kenya Red Cross shall not be held liable for any consequences arising from the use or implementation of the solutions post-hackathon. 

9. Future Collaboration 

Kenya Red Cross may invite participants to collaborate on further developing solutions after the hackathon. In such cases, additional agreements will be made to clearly define intellectual property (IP) rights, ownership, and responsibilities.
